Scholarships at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte

On a regular basis numerous scholars from renowned national and international organizations and foundations spend research periods, for short research visits as well as for longer duration, at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich.

They include fellows with a scholarship of the States of the Federal Republic of Germany (duration 1-3 years), the award winners of the Zentralinstitut who receive a scholarship of the association 'Friends of the ZI', CONIVNCTA FLORESCIT, for an outstanding research paper, fellows of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Fulbright Commission and many other organizations.

The scholarships granted by the German Federal States Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are advertised (with the exception of Hamburg) on the ZI-Homepage, in the ZI-Newsletter and in the Kunstchronik. Application notifications are also published at university institutes in each respective state.

Terra Foundation for American Art Research Travel Grants 2011

The Terra Foundation for American Art Research Travel Grants support travel to the United States for research purposes. Foreign nationals enrolled in European universities whose research projects concern American art or transatlantic artistic relations prior to 1980 are eligible. Three pre-doctoral grants of $5,000 and three post-doctoral grants of $7,500 (for researchers who have been awarded their doctorate within the past ten years) are available. Applications must be received by one of the partnering institutions:

Wolfgang-Ratjen-Award

International Award for Outstanding Research in the Graphic Arts

The association 'Friends of the ZI' (CONIVNCTA FLORESCIT) offers an annual award for emerging scholars in the field of graphic arts.

The purpose of this award, which honours the memory of the collector Wolfgang Ratjen (1943-1997) and is awarded since 1995, is to encourage younger scholars to address topics in the field of graphic arts. Consideration will be given to a Ph.D. dissertation, M.A. thesis, or a scholarly article of larger scope, dealing with art historical questions of drawings and/or prints. Applicants should have an academic background. The winning candidate, chosen by an independent committee of scholars, will receive € 5,000 and is expected to spend three months conducting research at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich.

The purpose of this award is to encourage younger scholars to address topics in the field of applied arts. Consideration will be given to a Ph.D. dissertation, M.A. thesis, or a scholarly article of larger scope, dealing with art historical questions in this field. Applicants should have an academic background. The winning candidate, chosen by an independent committee of scholars, will receive € 4,500 and is expected to spend three months conducting research at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich.

The award was named after Werner Hauger (1936-1997) from 1998 to 2006 and after Helmut Seling from 2007 to 2009.

Theodor-Fischer-Award

International Award for Outstanding Research in the History of Architecture in the 19th and 20th Centuries

The association 'Friends of the ZI' (CONIVNCTA FLORESCIT) offers an annual award for emerging scholars in the field of the history of architecture in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The purpose of this award, named after the architect and university professor Theodor Fischer (1862-1938) and awarded since 2002, is to encourage younger scholars to bring the results of their work to the attention of a broader public. Consideration will be given to a Ph.D. dissertation, M.A. thesis, or scholarly article of larger scope, dealing with the history of architecture in the 19th and 20th centuries. Applicants should have an academic background. The winning candidate, chosen by an independent committee of scholars, will receive € 5,000 and is expected to spend three months conducting research at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich.
