Issuing of admission cards for the library and Photo Study Collection:
For initial registration, you will need an I.D. card and appropriate evidence of your academic or vocational occupation. Students studying in Munich can only be admitted for preparation of their Master of Arts or diploma thesis.
Ordering of books Brief descriptionThe library of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte is a reference library with restricted admission. Although it primarily serves art historical research, it is also to be regarded as a source for vocational training or occupational activities. With its holdings more than 500,000 volumes, including the Duke Franz of Bavaria Library, as well as about 1,250 current periodicals and over 50,000 auction sales catalogues, the library ranks among the largest art libraries worldwide. The collection profile covers the entire art history of the Western hemisphere, from the Early Middle Ages up to the present. Within the system of special subject collections of German art libraries, and supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the library of the ZI places special emphasis on the following subject matters:
Further areas of collection emphasis include sources on the theory of architecture, literature on gardens as well as art and architecture of the 20th/21st century. Due to the library's open access shelving system, the major part of the holdings is directly accessible. On each magazine level, the user can locate the books according to a system of book numbers which follows specific principles. Catalogues

Working Facilities and ResourcesThe library is equipped with two reading rooms with a total of 67 seats. Each desk has a bus bar for the use of notebooks. Internet access for notebooks is provided for in reading room 2. In reading room 1 two PCs are available for research in CD-ROM-databases of the ZI-network and for Internet-Research. Furthermore, a PC in reading room 1 is for research in those CD-ROMs which are not pre-installed in the ZI-network, and reading room 2 offers four work stations with Internet access and with access to the CD-ROM-databases of the ZI-network. Photocopying: When approved by the person in charge, you may make photocopies and colour scans yourself (Room 142; please note the opening hours of the copying service). Taking photographs of holdings of the library is subject to approval. The library features a repro stand for both artificial light and daylight photography. Please bring your own camera and register at the catalogue information desk. Microfiche- and Microfilm-readers are available. If you require paper copies of microfiches please refer to the Photo Study Collection, where a reader printer is at your disposal.
