The Quick search corresponds to a basic index search. All types of search terms may be used.
The system will retrieve all records which contain any combination of the terms for which you are searching.
The quick search is powered by MILOS, a program for automatic indexing which also makes selections using variations of spelling and synonyms for the specified term.
The quick search offers you the maximum results with unlimited matches but will also sometimes include non relevant records.
In contrast to the quick search, here you may search using multiple terms for a more qualified result. The search form allows you to define the type of search you want by using one or more of four fields. You may limit your search by date of publication.
Only in the field 'Title or Keywords' are more search terms permitted. You can change the default search form by clicking on the drop-down menu, to search, for example, for several personal names.
The system will automatically apply the Boolean operator AND to all fields chosen.
The database is not case-sensitive and it makes no difference whether you type all in upper or in lower case. Letters with accents are permitted. You may use umlauts or the resolved form. Please note initial articles in any language must be omitted.
Search by author, editor, etc. and also by artist or other persons who are the subject of publications or reviews. Search terms are automatically truncated at the right (brown, j will retrieve publications by and about brown, john ; brown, james ; brown, jane etc. Only one name is permitted in each field.
You may search by full title, phrases or individual words from the titles of publications and works of art. Items containing all the words and phrases you specify will be retrieved (Boolean operator AND).
By using quotation marks (") before the keyword you will get a truncation on the right ("rom will retrieve e.g. roma ; romani ; romantic).
Keyword searching is not to be confused with subject searching, but can also be important for a thematic query.
This method offers a means of searching by place-names (cities, villages etc. using the German form!), a combination of place /monument, and by the names of organisations.
It will retrieve also publications by organisations e.g. catalogues of museums or auctions:
The system will automatically apply the truncation on the right. Only one place or organisation in each field is permitted.
The subject headings used in this database are those of the German Schlagwort-Normdatei (SWD).
If your query does not correspond to an existing subject heading an index with terms that are closest to your term will automatically open.
Country or Region
Names of countries and regions that are tied to literary concepts important in art history. In many cases your research may pertain to more than one region in any given country. Searching by the current name of a country, the system will automatically show geographic divisions of the country as states, districts, Bundesländer, Départements, Landschaften, province. Please use the button 'Index' to find the right term.
Only one region or country per field.
Title or begin of a title of a series or journal (exact phrase).
You have to enter the International Standard Serial Number with hyphens. Truncation at any position on the right is possible.
Use in combination with at least one of the above mentioned search criteria, choosing between the exact year or a date range, as shown below:
Use in combination with at least one of the above mentioned search criteria. This search limit is valid only for records with subject headings.
You can limit your query to the exact year or date range.
If you do not choose the option "focus", by default, the system will 'intelligently' retrieve records whose chronological indexing corresponds in whatever way, for example only in part, to your query. This comprises also titles having subject headings without chronological information. Choosing the option "focus" you will see only records whose subject headings have chronological information matching precisely or at least fitting completely into the chronological period given in your query.
Based on your choice of search terms use the 'Index' button to open alphabetical lists. You may browse forward or backward in the index and directly select your terms.
The result of a successful search is a full record display (up to 10 items), a short title display (up to 250 items) or a message telling you there are either no or too many entries, and giving you the possibility to limit or refine your search scope, or switch to the index search.
Often the full record display contains hyperlinks, allowing you to browse through the index by related topics.
The full record of an article from a periodical normally presents a link [Periodical record] for full information on the periodical title and the holdings owned, as a well as another link [Holdings of German libraries (ZDB)] giving access to the pertinent informations in the Union Catalogue of Serials (ZDB). The link following the notice "Full text" yields direct access to the full text of the given article.
The full record of a periodical contains a link [Articles] allowing to see the list of all contributions catalogued from this journal. The full record display of a publication series has a link [Titles from this series] allowing to display the list of titles from this series owned.
